Last week I needed to wear black slack and white shirt to an event. When I went into the closet in the morning to get the slack I had in mind to wear they were no where to be found. I became frustrated because there were at least 10 pairs of black slack amid at least 25 pairs of other slack that I was sifting through. It became evident to me that most of the items in this closet have not been touched in several years. Was it time to spring clean the closet? As a senior move manager I realized I had to eat some of my own advise. If you haven’t touched it in “X” amount of time do you really still need it?
Two hours later there were two 50 gallon trash bag filled with pants, shorts, shirts, blouses, shoes, purses, scarves and jewelry. I felt good about donating these items to the Children’s Homes Society, Transition Home because the items would be worn and used. In the end the closet was still full but not jammed packed. So my new commitment is …..If you buy a new item, then you must remove a used item from the closet! Does this help with rightsizing, downsizing and de-cluttering one’s space?
If you have difficulty with de-cluttering contact a senior move manager for assistance. They can help sort, pack and move. They can be found by visiting the National Association of Senior Move Managers website. www.nasmm.org
